Czech designer Rony Plesl has created the Uovo D’argentis and Uovo D’oro hand blown glass chandeliers for the lighting producer Lasvit.
Modern palatial. Would be a beautiful chandelier in appropriately sized large lobbies or restaurants or massive halls.

Meat & Bread has been open for a while, but I haven’t had a chance to go, until yesterday.
When my friend and I arrived, it was so busy, there was a line up out the door. But, the line moved steadily and seats rotate out pretty quickly. We were seated and eating within 10 minutes.
The menu is made up of four sandwiches - porchetta, chicken, meatball and grilled cheese - on in-house baked ciabatta bread, a tomato soup or chickpea salad side, and a bacon maple ice cream sandwich. We shared the porchetta and chicken sandwiches and the bacon maple ice cream sandwich (how could you not? …and I would again!). Yum. The ingredients were fresh. The menu is well priced. And the staff is really nice.
I should mention the space - high ceilings, big windows, a series of vertical antiqued mirrors, a long open kitchen and service bar and a steel-topped communal table that seats about 20; designed well.
They offer catering for small and large office parties, and private functions, and you can rent their colossal communal table and heritage space for an after work bash, Christmas party or secret guild meeting…

Have you heard of Vancouver’s Scout Magazine?
Scout is wholly independent and ‘scout[s] out Vancouver … by introducing readers to the people who grow and cook our food, play the raddest tunes in our better venues, create our most interesting art, and design everything from what we wear to the spaces we inhabit’.
My favourite feature: Anticipated Restaurant Openings.
Dining out in Vancouver is by far one of my favourite things to do. We’re lucky to have so many well-priced, diverse and delicious restaurants; and that more keep opening up!

I had the pleasure of dining at La Quercia for the first time a few weeks ago. It was recommended by some friends, and I recommended it to a friend who was coming into town for dinner.
I rarely go out for Italian food; I like Italian food, but most of the time, I don’t think it’s worth it. La Quercia would be my exception. Everything is made fresh. You can order from the a la carte menu, or you can go for a multi-course menu and try a bit of everything; a 5-course ($43), 9-course menu ($59), or, if you have a reservation for 6 or more, they will cook a unique 7-course menu for you ($49). One of the things I like best is that they serve plates family style; eat as much or as little as you’d like. But, it will be very hard to eat a little, believe me. I wanted to lick many of the plates, especially the lemon cream.
Reservations are strongly recommended, it is tiny and books up weeks in advance.

Gastown is getting a new sushi joint. Boneta/Diamond co-owner Mark Brand and his business partner Alex Usow (in the Powell Street clothing store Sharks + Hammers) are opening Sea Monstr Sushi at 55 Powell. The space will house Sea Monstr Sushi on the Powell Street side, and the new Sharks + Hammer General Store on the Alexander Street side. Anticipated to open in September 2010.

Cactus Club is my favourite of the chain restaurants. BC’s 18th (and Canada’s 21st) Cactus Club is slated to open in English Bay (at what looks like to be the base of Denman and Davie, along the seawall, in place of the Beach Cafe), in the summer of 2011. It will be, by far, the best patio seating in Vancouver; sunsets and people watching - amazing.

the main event: main street dining for the food bank

Until this Sunday, January 24th, some Main Street restaurants are offering three-course tasting menus for set prices of $25, $35 and $45.

All restaurants will join the fight against hunger by donating a percentage of their food receipts to The Greater Vancouver Food Bank.

I went to eight ½ tonight with a friend, and it was pretty tasty. Great coffee too.
